Rotator Cuff Treatment
The rotator cuff is comprised of the four muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder ball in socket joint. They support and stabilize the shoulder and make it possible for you to move your arm up and down in a wide range of motion without your are popping out. Because it is used so much in our activities, the rotator cuff is often damaged or torn.
A tear can happen in the tendons of the rotator cuff due to strenuous use, or because of regular wear and tear, especially in people over forty years of age. Sudden and severe injuries are most often due to sports injuries, although sports that require overhead motions such as in ball throwing, hitting with a racket or weight lifting can cause a degradation of the area and cause tears.
Except in extreme cases, rotator cuff treatment is usually prescribed as the first method to repair the damage. Surgery is usually only necessary in some cases when the tendon has torn completely away or there has been other extreme trauma.
Rotator cuff treatment begins with following RICE, or rest, ice, compression and elevation to keep swelling down and allow the shoulder to heal. However, the shoulder should not be kept motionless or scar tissue can develop, leading to a stiffening of the shoulder and even greater problems than the original tear.
Exercise is really the key to proper rotator cuff treatment. This type of physical therapy is what can bring a full range of motion back to your arm and strengthen those muscles so that they are ready for everyday use and able to withstand the demands placed upon them.
It's important that you do the right exercises. Some exercises that may be specifically for the shoulder could potentially cause more damage and make the healing process slow down. Any exercise program that you undergo should be recommended or okayed by your doctor.
The Internet is an excellent source of videos and explanations of the various exercises to do for your rotator cuff. There are also good books on the subject that can be very useful to you in performing exercises properly and explaining how and why they work and are so important.
One such book is the 7 Minute Rotator Cuff Solution. This book has great reviews and has helped many people to experience a great decrease in shoulder pain and more rapid healing of the rotator cuff. However, as with any exercise program it's very important that you consult your doctor before adopting it.
Applying heat or massaging the shoulder is something that can also help to bring blood to the area and aid in healing. This along with stretches and exercises should be all you need to complete your rotator cuff treatment and you will eventually have the full use of your shoulder and be protected against future injuries to the shoulder.
