Prevent And Treat Injuries With Rotator Cuff Strengthening Exercises
Most people are aware that exercising is an important way to improve your overall health, lose weight and look and feel better. It is also a wonderful way to prevent injury and some illnesses that can come with age and inactivity. A strong body is far less likely to suffer from injuries during every day activities than an out of shape one.
As people get on in age some injuries become more common. One that occurs frequently in people over forty years old is damage to the shoulder. This is most often because of wear and tear of normal use, built up over time.
At the shoulder the humerus and the scapula meet. The top of the humerus (upper arm bone) is in the shape of a ball. The scapula (shoulder blade) has a shallow area where that ball can rest. However, they don't stay together on their own. They are wrapped by four muscles and tendons called the rotator cuff, which serves the purpose of stabilizing the shoulder and allowing for a wide range of motion in the upper arm.
The rotator cuff can be injured easily in sports where the arm is often raised above the head and quick or sharp motions are made as in throwing a ball or pushing through water during swimming. However, as mentioned, in those over forty the same type of injury can occur simply by lifting groceries into the car and raising your hands to shampoo your hair every day.
It is possible to prevent injuries to the shoulder with rotator cuff strengthening exercises and stretches. The muscles in the rotator cuff are not typically very strong which can lead them to not support the arm as well as necessary. By following specific exercise programs for the rotator cuff you can strengthen those muscles so they are able to handle more use.
Keeping those same muscles and tendons flexible with stretching can help keep you from sustaining an injury with sudden movements. However, be sure that you doctor approves any exercises that you plan to do regularly to avoid those that might cause more harm than good.
Rotator cuff strengthening exercises are also an extremely important part of treatment of an injury. In order to avoid having the shoulder freeze after an injury, it is important to keep it moving. After the proper amount of rest, you will need to do some basic exercises and stretches to prevent scar tissue from forming and blocking the joint or muscles.
Whether you are using rotator cuff strengthening exercises as a preventative measure or for treatment of an injury be sure to get a recommendation from your doctor as to what exercises will most benefit you and bring your shoulder up to full strength without the risk of doing any damage.
